Join us as we investigate the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi security breach, examining its many facets and identifying key factors. Improper network segmentation by unauthorized entities caused server compromise, as a matter of fact, resulting in critical application non-functionality. \u2013 According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/cert-in.org.in\/\">Computer Emergency Response Team<\/a> (CERT-In*). Apart from the official report by CERT-In, following details of attack were in public light:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/current-affairs\/aiims-cyber-attack-originated-from-china-all-servers-retrieved-now-mohfw-122121400571_1.html\">Business-Standard<\/a>, out of 100 servers (40 physical and 60 virtual), 5 physical servers were successfully compromised by hackers.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/government\/aiims-servers-cyberattack-ransomware-rajya-sabha\">The Wire<\/a> reported that 1.3 terabytes of data were encrypted during the attack.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/technology\/hackers-demand-rs-200-crore-ransom-in-cryptocurrency-from-aiims-delhi-as-server-remains-down-for-6th-day-15279201.htm\">CNBC<\/a> also stated that the data of approximately 3-4 crore patients, including information of VIPs, politicians, and celebrities, is feared to have been exposed due to the breach.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstoday.in\/latest\/in-focus\/story\/cyber-attack-at-aiims-delhi-hackers-demand-rs-200-cr-in-crypto-says-report-354475-2022-11-28\">Business Today<\/a> reported that the hackers demanded a ransom of \u20b9 200 Crore and the server remained offline for 6 days.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Went Wrong?<\/h2>\n<p>A Preliminary Analysis of the Delhi AIIMS Cyber Attack<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.progressive.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Delhi-AIIMS-Cyber-Attack.jpg\" alt=\"Delhi AIIMS Cyber Attack\" width=\"789\" height=\"444\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>1. Existing Systems Were Already Vulnerable<\/h3>\n<p>The AIIMS has not undergone system upgrades for the past thirty years, as indicated by concerned officials at the National Informatics Center (NIC*). Moreover, the facility operated with outdated equipment, software, and an obsolete version of Windows.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Threat Actors Gained Unauthorized Access<\/h3>\n<p>Utilizing compromised credentials of employees and patients available on the dark web, hackers gained insight into network usage and vulnerabilities. Consequently, this unauthorized access included potentially sensitive information and saved passwords.<\/p>\n<h3>3. The Failure of Legacy Networks<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindubusinessline.com\/news\/aiims-knew-its-e-hospital-network-was-outdated-heavily-prone-to-security-risk-show-documents\/article66214979.ece\">AIIMS outsourced<\/a> digital and IT network solutions to Inspira Enterprise Pvt Ltd. They did this for new blocks of AIIMS. However, they did not cover the upgradation of older networks furthermore leaving them vulnerable to cyber attacks.<\/p>\n<h3>4. The Paradox: Was it a Ransomware Attack or a Data Breach?<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deccanherald.com\/opinion\/in-perspective\/aiims-cyberattack-asking-the-right-questions-matters-1179421.html\"> motives behind<\/a> the cyber-attack were ambiguous, making it challenging to respond to the threat actors. Some speculate that the hackers&#8217; primary goal was to obtain health records of important individuals, and they may be using the ransom demand as a cover to mislead investigators, thereby employing it as a guise to conceal their true intentions.<\/p>\n<h2>Impact on Hospital Operations:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The investigating agencies recommended blocking internet services.<\/li>\n<li>The entire digital system collapsed, and the operations shifted to manual mode.<\/li>\n<li>The attack, consequently, affected various digital services of the hospital, such as smart laboratory, billing, report generation, and the appointment system, both for outpatient and inpatient purposes.<\/li>\n<li>The teams manually prepared death\/birth certificates.<\/li>\n<li>The disruption caused delays in hospital operations and hence queues at the hospital grew even longer and more chaotic.<\/li>\n<li>Poor and sick from remote areas suffered the most.<\/li>\n<li>The cyberattack managed to cripple AIIMS Delhi\u2019s operations for nearly two weeks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The AIIMS cyber-attack is a wake-up call for India&#8217;s cyber security.
